Email Backup vs. Email Archiving

Did you ever wonder what the difference is between an email backup and an email archive? Or did you just assume there is no difference at all? Don’t worry, you are not alone. In fact, many people believe they don’t need to archive their emails when they already have a backup solution in place. They are wrong.

Email backup and archiving are two completely different concepts that are not mutually exclusive, but actually complement each other.

While backups are designed for securing data for a limited time (e.g. for disaster recovery) and normally only accessible by an administrator, email archiving ensures that data is retrievable by any user and available over a long period of time. The IT strategy of security-minded companies shouldn’t fail to include both solutions.
